CATHY THIESEN | MA, LMHCA (WA), Professional Counselor Associate (OR)

Hi, I'm Cathy!

I take a compassionate, supportive approach in counseling and love partnering with individuals and families as they navigate challenging times of life. I believe that everyone is capable of change and that a safe, respectful, and empathetic therapeutic relationship can be a powerful tool in the journey of healing.

I take a collaborative approach to counseling and consider each client's feedback, goals, personality, and developmental stage. With young children I primarily use non-directive (client-centered) play therapy and sand tray therapy, and with adolescents and adults I use cognitive behavioral techniques and person-centered therapy. I incorporate interventions from other modalities when appropriate, including mindfulness, acceptance and commitment theory, and solution focused therapy.

I work with clients struggling with life transitions, relationships struggles, anxiety, ADHD, behavioral issues, depression, grief, shame, spirituality, low self-esteem. I have specialized training in play therapy for children as well as Exposure and Response Prevention Therapy for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

My education includes a BA in English from Wheaton College (IL), a Masters of Library Science from the University of North Texas, and a Masters in Counseling with a child and youth emphasis from Western Seminary (Portland, OR). I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor Associate in Washington (MC61347899) and a Registered Associate in Oregon (R7186)). I am currently supervised by Dr. Bart Fowler, M.A. Psy.D., a licensed psychologist in Washington (PY60153263) and in Oregon (1297).

I grew up in a number of places, including Texas and Belgium, and I love traveling back to Texas for good barbecue and Tex-Mex. In my spare time, I enjoy tending my garden, knitting, reading books, and camping with my husband, four children, and two Australian Shepherds.

I abide by Washington and Oregon state law and ethics pertaining to counselors and the American Counseling Association code of ethics.
